It is expected the building which housed the pharmacy, a newsagent, cafe and tourist centre will have to be demolished.

A temporary pharmacy will open on King Island, off Tasmania’s north-west tip, as investigations continue into a fire that destroyed a historic building in Currie.

The island’s pharmacy, newsagent, a cafe, apartments and a tourist information centre were destroyed when the blaze ripped through a building in the main street on Sunday morning.

The damage bill is estimated at more than $1 million and it is expected the building will have to be demolished.

Police forensic officers from mainland Tasmania flew to the island to investigate the cause.

A temporary pharmacy service will begin operating out of the island’s hospital to service 1,800 residents.

Braddon MP Roger Jaensch will visit the island to inspect the damage and report back to the State Government.
