Singing pharmacist touts flu shots

Eldon Wilson isn’t singing the blues, he’s singing the flu.

That’s right: Hutchinson has its very own singing pharmacist who uses his voice to entice Kmart customers to stop by the pharmacy and get a flu shot.

While his voice is pleasant, his tune is one of those catchy campfire kind of songs. He does whatever it takes to get the attention of shoppers all the doo-dah day. Kids run around the store mimicking the lines. And even better than that, sometimes the shoppers give him a round of applause.

But, would hearing a catchy tune really encourage someone to get poked with a needle? Not really, he says. He ‘s finding that most people are already immunized.

However, about a month ago Wilson was told by his corporate office that he hadn’t been dispensing enough flu shots. To increase the number, they wanted him to make an announcement every 30 minutes that shots were available. He decided he didn’t want to come across like the typical public address one hears at the big-box stores. Instead, he decided he would sing the announcement.

His a cappella rendition, in his own words, goes like this: “Welcome all to Kmart; I hope it’s a nice day. This is your pharmacist; I have something to say. Flu season is upon us, if you have forgot. Be sure to protect yourself: Get yourself a flu shot.

“The process is quite simple: It’s really quick, you see. Because I can bill your insurance or Medicare Part B. Let me help you get one; it’s really not that hard. You may even be eligible for a $5 gift card,” Wilson sings.

Wilson, 27, uses a tune that comes from his camping days at Rock Springs 4-H camp. He grew up in Carbondale, south of Topeka, and graduated from Santa Fe Trail High School. He then went on to college and graduated from the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy. For the past two and a half years, he has been working at the Hutchinson Kmart.

While pharmacy is his vocation, singing is something he believes he does well. Just ask his Ukrainian girlfriend. He sings to her every night over the telephone. She especially loves it when he sings the theme song from the movie “Titanic.” Disney songs and country music are also popular with her. He’ll be able to sing to her in person in just 18 days. The Internet couple will finally meet when he arrives at her home, which is three and a half hours south of Kiev.

Back at the pharmacy, he has made a recording that is played on his days off.

“That’s just Eldon,” said a cashier, shrugging his shoulders as Wilson’s voice comes over the P.A., as if every store has a singing pharmacist. But they don’t.

Just because he’s scheduled to stop the flu song on Jan. 31 doesn’t mean he’ll stop crooning. Like any creative person, his mind is spinning with ideas for upcoming shingles and pneumococcal pneumonia shots.
