Pharmacist snooped through health information, WRHA says

A pharmacist from the Grace Hospital has parted ways with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority after it was discovered he accessed the medical records of 56 patients from around the province.

WRHA chief operating officer Real Cloutier told a news conference this afternoon that the wrongful access to patient information extended as far back as July 2013.

Cloutier said he was made aware of it March 5.

The pharmacist no longer works for the WRHA.

The pharmacist told the WRHA he snooped out of “curiosity.”

The health records were of patients to whom this pharmacist was not providing care, the WRHA said.

Cloutier said while the WRHA would not name the pharmacist, his identity would be disclosed upon request to the victims.

He said it would be up to the provincial Ombudsman to recommend whether the matter should be referred to police.

The Manitoba Ombudsman and the College of Pharmacists of Manitoba has also been made aware of the privacy breach.
