Pharmacist shoots alleged robber

CHEYENNE – A local pharmacist shot and injured a would-be robber at the Medicap Pharmacy on Bluegrass Circle on Saturday morning, according to Cheyenne Police Department officials.

The suspect, who has not yet been identified by police, entered the pharmacy at about 9:45 Saturday morning and demanded narcotic pain pills, Police Chief Brian Kozak said.

The man, described only as a white male, was “brandishing what the employees believed to be a firearm,” Kozak said. The weapon was ultimately determined by police to be a very realistic-looking toy gun.

“The pharmacist then pulled out a firearm – a handgun, a revolver – and shot the suspect once in the chest,” Kozak said.

The suspect survived the shooting and was transported to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center.

“It appears that the bullet missed his vital organs and the suspect is in stable condition at the hospital,” Kozak said.

After the shooting, the pharmacist, who has not been named by the police and is only described as a 42-year-old male, was taken to the police station to meet with detectives, he said.

It’s unclear whether any charges will be brought against the pharmacist.

The shooting is “still currently under investigation by our detectives,” Kozak said. “But the pharmacist is being cooperative.”

Kozak said the police will release the name of the pharmacist only after an arrest affidavit is filed on the robbery suspect, which may not occur until next week.

Medicap Pharmacy reopened for business before noon Saturday.

Gene Barbour, owner of the pharmacy, declined to comment on the incident.
