George L. Abell Jr., retired industrial chemist

George L. Abell Jr., of Lancaster, a retired industrial chemist, died Sunday in Hospice Buffalo, Cheektowaga, after a short illness. He was 87.

Born in Pitcairn, Pa., he earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Buffalo.

Mr. Abell worked as a chemist for Westinghouse, Roe Paint and Varnish Co., Carborundum and Amax Specialty Metals, where he was in charge of the lab. He retired in 1989.

He enjoyed woodworking and reading books on history, particularly on Abraham Lincoln and America’s wars.

His wife of 57 years, the former Muriel H. McDavitt, died in 2009.

Survivors include two sons, Timothy and Paul; two sisters, Teresa Siracuse and Roberta Yohn; a brother, Donald; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 8 p.m. Friday in Urban-Amigone Funeral Home, 7540 Clinton St. at Girdle Road, Elma.
